DTIC's collections contain information that is:
- classified Confidential or Secret
- unclassified but sensitive, therefore distribution is limited, i. e. controlled (unclassified, limited UL)
- unclassified and available for public release (unclassified, unlimited U2)
Information can be sensitive, therefore limited, for a number of reasons:
- Protect privacy
- Protect copyrighted material
- Proprietary information about companies that work for the DoD
- Contractor performance evaluations by government monitors
- Software documentation
- Administrative or operational use by the controlling organization
- Premature dissemination would harm the national interest
- Direct military support is being provided
- Information regarding foreign governments
- Test or evaluation results of military hardware or processes
- Technology deemed militarily critical (export controlled) and not to be shared with other nations
- Information to be safeguarded due to law, regulation, or other DoD guidance
