Who We Are
The Defense Technical Information Center’s (DTIC) mission is to maximize our Nation’s investment in DoD research and development, by helping communities work together to solve problems and avoid duplicative work.
DTIC collects, organizes and safeguards the results of DoD’s multibillion dollar investment each year in science and technology, prototyping, and rapid fielding by providing scientific and technical information to authorized users. DTIC captures the life cycle of science and technology, from requirement through technology insertion, and strives to provide users complete and relevant data to enhance current capabilities and envision future capabilities while protecting DoD information assets from adversaries and rivals.
- Collection – DTIC collects, secures and preserves more than four million RDT&E information assets. Our collections include final technical reports and presentations, conference proceedings, studies, research project status reports, industry independent research status reports, budget requests, warfighter requirements, and collaborative content.
- Connecting the Dots, Making Information Discoverable – With over 4 million unstructured text, structured database, budget data, conference presentations, and collaboration entries in DTIC’s collections, enhancing discoverability is a key challenge. DTIC is addressing this challenge through an innovative partnership with the US Air Force in an R&E effort with a small business to use semantic technologies to reduce the expertise a user needs to find information.
- Information Analysis Centers (IAC) - The IACs provide one of the Department’s largest research and development contracting vehicles, performing between $1B-$2B of work annually across hundreds of task orders, supporting the Services, the Combatant Commands, DoD Agencies, and federal government partners. The IAC IDIQ contracting vehicle is a role model example of fast, flexible, customer focused, low-cost contracting for the R&D needs of the Department. The IACs drive innovation across DoD with technical analysis and development of material solutions to DoD challenges and capture the results in the DTIC collections for reuse, multiplying its value to the Department.
